National Review Debunks the Birther Layering PDF Conspiracy
Within moments of Obama releasing his Birth Certificate came the expansion of the Birther conspiracy theory, to include this new document as well. Leading the charge in this latest display of militant ignorance is Pamela Geller. Geller had previously spent the past several years “proving” that the last Birth Certificate was an undisputed forgery.
Rather than accepting reality for what it is, Pam doubled down with a new conspiracy theory – the PDF of Obama’s BC contained layers, thus “proving” this document to also be a forgery.
Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs (who is no stranger to the issue of forged documents) was the first to show that there is no mystery concerning layering in a PDF document here in this post:
“Get ready for a SHOCK! Because the PDF released by the White House, purportedly an image of the President’s “long form” birth certificate … contains layers! LAYERS!!! It has layers! Don’t you see? All you have to is load the PDF into Adobe Illustrator and you can see them yourself! Layers! Aiieee! It’s an obvious forgery!
Geller cites a random poster from Free Republic, a YouTube video, and some other right wing bloggers who assert with absolute certainty that no PDF file could possibly contain layers if it was a genuine scanned image of a black President’s birth certificate. Nope, couldn’t happen.”
As well, the National Review also investigated, and dismissed the new Birther Layer Conspiracy:
“We have received several e-mails today calling into question the validity of the PDF that the White House released, namely that there are embedded layers in the document. There are now several other people on the case. We looked into it and dismissed it.
The PDF is composed of multiple images. That’s correct. Using a photo editor or PDF viewer of your choice, you can extract this image data, view it, hide it, etc. But these layers, as they’re being called, aren’t layers in the traditional photo-editing sense of the word. They are, quite literally, pieces of image data that have been positioned in a PDF container. They appear as text but also contain glyphs, dots, lines, boxes, squiggles, and random garbage. They’re not combined or merged in any way. Quite simply, they look like they were created programmatically, not by a human.”
When a rational person is presented with facts that conflict with their currently held belief, they will re-evaluate their position. When a mythologist is confronted with a reality that is in tension with their belief, they just ignore it. Thus the term that I coined – militant ignorance.
Because of Pam’s expertise in all things fraudulent, FOX news is always sure to openly offer her a soapbox.

A new WorldNetDaily Birther poll shows that this type of propaganda falls on fertile soil and holds a large audience captive, with some 31% believing that Obama’s long-form birth certificate is fake or suspicious, and an additional 60% moving the goalpost to other eligibility arguments.
