Greek demonstrators took over the Finance Ministry building in central Athens, blocking streets in the city center, and Portuguese schools and hospitals were shut as unions stepped up protests against government deficit cuts.

In Athens, about 200 members of the PAME union group, aligned with the Communist Party of Greece, occupied the six- story ministry building today while protesters took over the nearby General Accounting Office, according to a police spokeswoman. Another group blocked a central road in downtown Athens, snarling traffic.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday seemed poised to require state and local governments to obey the Second Amendment guarantee of a personal right to a gun, but with perhaps considerable authority to regulate that right. The dominant sentiment on the Court was to extend the Amendment beyond the federal level, based on the 14th Amendment’s guarantee of “due process,” since doing so through another part of the 14th Amendment would raise too many questions about what other rights might emerge.

A north suburban Grayslake Middle School student who was thought to have overdosed on Vicodin was not the only student who had health problems from taking pills supplied that day for free by a high school student.

Grayslake Police Cmdr. Matt McCutcheon said Tuesday the student did not overdose on Vicodin, that it was possibly a muscle relaxer called Soma, but police are awaiting test results. The 14-year-old boy was taken to the hospital Feb. 23 after he had seizures at the school.

Police said that evening another middle school student, a 14-year-old girl, nearly died after taking 13 of the pills. She was rushed to the hospital.

“She's OK, but they said at the hospital that a couple of more pills and it could have been a totally different story,” McCutcheon said.
