Hat Tip: Science & Religion Today
One of the aspects of the New Atheism that I find less than scholarly is their narrow appropriation of what counts as knowledge. As someone who hangs around Christian fundamentalists more than most scholars, I see this same tendency in their ranks.
This leads me to think that the New Atheism parallels Christian fundamentalism in both its narrow consideration for what counts as legitimate knowledge and the concomitant fanaticism of their view.
I propose that we eschew fundamentalism in all its forms—both Christian and atheist—and open ourselves to the evidence we find in the natural sciences, social sciences, theological sciences, religious experience, and moral intuitions.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) – The parents who carried out the balloon boy hoax were sentenced to jail Wednesday and given strict probation conditions that forbid them from earning any money from the spectacle for four years.
Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail, including 60 days of work release that will let him pursue his job as a construction contractor while serving his time. His wife, Mayumi, was sentenced to 20 days in jail
on Tuesday announced a new chain of government-run, cut-rate retail stores that will sell everything from food to cars to clothing from places such as China, Argentina and Bolivia.
“We're creating Comerso, meaning Socialist Corporation of Markets,” Chavez said at the opening of a “socialist” fast-food location for traditional Venezuelan arepas (cornbread).
“They'll see what's good. We'll show them what a real market is all about, not those speculative, money-grubbing markets, but a market for the people,” said Chavez in his drive to change Venezuela
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Poverty has forced at least 225,000 children in Haiti's cities into slavery as unpaid household servants, far more than previously thought, a report said Tuesday.
The Pan American Development Foundation's report also said some of those children — mostly young girls — suffer sexual, psychological and physical abuse while toiling in extreme hardship.
The report recommends Haiti's government and international donors focus efforts on educating the poor and expanding social services such as shelters for girls, who make up an estimated two-thirds of the child servant population.
